Party Ideas: Halloween Fire Ballet

As many of you know, I got my dance start in the ballet. In my opinion, every dancer should, in order to form the grace and skills that I have not seen any other dance teach quite as well. I still miss the ballet, though I am happy where I am so me and the Sirens sought to create a new ballet experience. One that everyone could appreciate and would be a bit... different. Combine this with our love for Halloween and the Gothic Fire Ballet was born. In our fire ballet we use our own custom fire props to tell the story of vengeful ghosts whose lives ended at their own hands due to their broken hearts. Now they dance to their mournful songs while plotting their revenge to their still alive suitors. Though some scary elements, it is a family friendly show. Performed en pointe (when floors allow) and deeply rooted in classical ballet.

It is no secret that Halloween is by far my favorite holiday. Scaring friends, an excuse to dress up, candy, not to mention the weather is getting cooler and pumpkin and apple flavored everything! I can't help but be in a good mood this time of year! Another awesome thing about Halloween is Halloween parties which means Halloween shows! Over the years I have performed a variety of Halloween themed fire shows, belly dance shows and just plain old dance shows and am always looking for an excuse to bring them out again! Some examples include: ghostly ballerinas balancing candelabras on their heads, a statue coming to life to dance for her maker, a dancer transforming into a demon, little red riding hood escaping the big bad wolf, fire gothic ballerinas, oracle of delphi and of course a modern rendition of Michael Jackson's Thriller!  Check out the gallery below for videos and photos of some of my favorite past Halloween dance shows.

In South Florida, we are so lucky to have amazing weather almost all year long. We live where everyone else vacations and our lifestyle shows it. Mainly in that we almost all have a pool at our house or condo. And while our relatives think this is the most amazing thing, the novelty wears thin for us. There is something timeless about the 1920s. The bootlegs, flappers, jazz, all of it has such a precious place in Americana. Despite the Great Depression, Prohibition and the end of WWI, Americans still found joy, albeit through illegal means. Women rebelled against the oppressive Victorian Age and removed their corsets, opted for suntans (since the nouveau riche were all vacationing in posh Sant Tropez now) and bobbed their hair. Men rebelled and mob connections had Rum Runners bringing booze from Cuba while others made their own bathtub gin. It was a dangerous and exciting time to be alive and a perfect theme for a party!

Though the fashion and dance are timeless from the Roaring Twenties, every once in awhile there is a resurgence in popularity due to movies (Chicago, Great Gatsby) or the come back of whiskey and gin cocktails. And to go along with a classy Gatsby party, why not have some flapper entertainment? Sirens perform group flapper and burlesque numbers and even tap solos to put the perfect polish to your evening. We can even teach you and your guests how to jive and Charleston with the best of them!

Photoshoot Behind the Scenes with Doriana Riosa Photography

This past week I was lucky to shoot with Doriana Riosa in Delray Beach. We had grand plans for some long exposure shots of belly dance but Mother Nature had other intentions. Regardless, we got a beautiful moody sunset which I think showcased my new amber costume perfectly. To me it is a perfect portrait of Autumn and Mabon. A perfect balance of Light and Dark. Though we will surrender the the god of winter, our internal light let's us know the god of spring is ever renewing and lasting. Though the veil between our worlds will almost disappear by Samhain and we will enter the darkest of the seasons we will also enter the beginning of the Festivals of Light, Diwali, Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas. Embrace this time for reflection and introspection. Come out renewed like the plants that only appear dead but rise from the ground every spring.

Witches of East End Much?

Besides dancing and anthropology I have always had an interest in modeling. Not commercial or runway but creating artistic images with like minded photographers. When the opportunity came up to do a workshop with John Woodward and some of his students I knew I couldn't say no. First, it was the Summer Solstice, longest day  the astrological year, how cool to have an image at daybreak on this day? Not to mention that the solstice hold spiritual connotations for me as well.

I agreed a month in advance, and like luck would have it, it turned into the longest day of the year work wise as well. Not only was I going to be waking up at 4 am to catch that oh so extra early sunrise, but I also would be going straight to teaching my normal class, a rehearsal with my trio Belly dance Sirens, a private class in Hollywood and then a string of parties and restaurant shows ending with the last show at 1 am in Miami. I got to bed exactly at 4:00 am completing my 24 hour day.

While it might sound like a nightmare, I actually couldn't have been happier. Doing everything I love in one long whirlwind day (which happens more often than you would think) gives me a chance to really appreciate not just my life but the talent and dedication I have cultivated as well as blessings I can not control entirely such as my location, health and time. Even in my own country, a woman would not have been able to have this freedom as little as 60-70 years ago and still women all over the world do not experience this blessing. It is important to not take for granted our lives. Of course there is always someone having it better, but there are many more having it worse. Be thankful, breath, exhale.

CASTING CALL Goddess Revealed: Dance Fitness Reality Series

I am proud to announce that Belly Dance Sirens will be hosting and instructing on the first Belly Dance Fitness Reality Show: Goddess Revealed. We will take 10 women who have tried but ultimately failed in their weight loss and fitness goals and transform them, revealing the Goddess within. Through the Mediterranean Diet, belly dance, ballet and pilates these women will loose their weight while also gaining self consciousness and awareness of self.
